What trips people up

  • Check
    The licence rule is softer than the passport rule: the photo must let the holder be recognised 'einwandfrei' and should follow the BMI criteria only 'wenn möglich'. We apply the full criteria anyway, since the same counter may handle your passport.
  • Check
    No photo age is stated for the Führerschein (the passport's six months is not repeated), and the BMI's colour-only rule names the passport, ID card and residence title but not the licence. We still deliver colour.
  • Check
    The exchange costs 73 euros, is handled by any Führerscheinbehörde in Austria (Bezirkshauptmannschaft, Magistrat or Landespolizeidirektion; in Vienna an appointment is mandatory), and the new card arrives by post within five to ten days while a vorläufiger Führerschein covers you for up to four weeks.
  • Check
    Unlimited paper licences stay valid until 19 January 2033, so the exchange, and the photo, are voluntary until then.

Good to know before you pay

If you have just passed the driving test, the first licence follows a different procedure: the Fahrprüfer hands you a vorläufiger Führerschein and the card is produced once the fees on the Kostenblatt are paid.   • Bei erfolgreicher Absolvierung der praktischen Fahrprüfung erhalten Sie von der Fahrprüferin/vom Fahrprüfer
  • Innerhalb von spätestens fünf bis zehn Tagen nach dem Produktionsauftrag wird der Scheckkartenführerschein per Post an die von der Antragstellerin/vom Antragsteller angegebene Adresse zugestellt.
