Austrian Passport Photo (Reisepass, 35 x 45 mm Passbild): size and requirements
The Austrian Passport Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Einfärbig hell (idealerweise grau); bei hellen Haaren mittelgrau, bei dunklen Haaren hellgrau; kein Muster, keine Schatten; head 67 to 80 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-07 against oesterreich.gv.at (Bundeskanzleramt) / Bundesministerium für Inneres (BMI), Passbild-Kriterien.
For the single colour Passbild you hand in at the Passbehörde (Bezirkshauptmannschaft, Magistrat, Landespolizeidirektion or Gemeinde) with an Austrian Reisepass application, including a child's passport. Not for a Schengen visa for Austria, which uses the same criteria but is filed at a representation abroad.

What trips people up
- CheckAustria states the head as a fraction, not a range: 'ca. 2/3 des Bildes' (about 30 mm) with a hard ceiling of 36 mm. An ICAO-style 80 percent head sits right on that ceiling, so we aim for the two-thirds mark and keep the crown clear of the top edge; tall hairstyles may run out of the frame.
- CheckEye distance is measured too: at least 8 mm between pupil centres, 10 mm being optimal. A head cropped too small fails this even if the head height looks fine.
- CheckColour is mandatory for the Reisepass ('Schwarz/Weiß Fotos können für den Reisepass, Personalausweis und Aufenthaltstitel nicht verwendet werden') and the print must be on glossy, smooth paper with no surface texture such as a honeycomb pattern.
- CheckIdeal background is grey, not white: medium grey for light hair, light grey for dark hair, always one colour with enough contrast to face and hair. Our advice, not a BMI statistic: avoid a white wall behind blond hair, since the BMI pairs light hair with a medium-grey background.
- CheckThe BMI refuses any distortion of the head: no mirrored images and no changed proportions 'z.B. um den Kopf schmäler aussehen zu lassen'. Classic portrait poses with turned shoulders are not allowed either.
- CheckChildren must be alone in the picture with the whole face visible and eyes open; the citizen portal adds that deviations are tolerated only where 'der Entwicklungsstand der Person oder körperliche Gegebenheiten es nicht anders ermöglichen', and the child (even a baby) must attend in person.
- CheckFingerprints are taken at the counter from the 12th birthday; the photo is the only thing you bring yourself. The application must be made in person ('muss persönlich eingebracht werden').

Quotes are in German. Quotes 1-2 are from the oesterreich.gv.at page 'Reisepass – Neuausstellung' at source.url (read via the r.jina.ai text proxy; sources/at/oesterreich-gv-reisepass-neuausstellung.txt; quote 1 is the 'Erforderliche Unterlagen' line, which links the Passbildkriterien lexicon entry). Quotes 3-11 are from the BMI page 'Passbild-Kriterien' https://www.bmi.gv.at/607/passbild_kriterien.html (Letzte Aktualisierung 2. April 2026; read directly; sources/at/bmi-passbild-kriterien.txt), to which the portal's lexicon entry https://www.oesterreich.gv.at/de/lexicon/P/Seite.991253 (sources/at/oesterreich-gv-passbildkriterien.txt) resolves. Head fractions: 'ca. 2/3' = 30 mm of 45 mm (0.667) as the minimum, 36 mm (0.8) as the stated maximum; the BMI gives no explicit minimum, so the lower bound is our reading of 'ca. 2/3'. The 8 mm eye-distance rule has no field. editing 'background-replacement-ok': the BMI forbids altering the head and its proportions, not the background. dpi 600 is our rendering choice ('hoher Druckauflösung' only). No age-based child relaxation is published, so child is left undefined.
