For the recent photo of a Belgian child under 12 that a parent brings to the commune when requesting a Kids-ID, the electronic identity and EU travel document for children. Not for the adult eID issued from age 12, and not for a child's Belgian passport, which the commune or embassy often photographs itself.

What trips people up
- CheckThe commune asks for three things: parental authority, the child in person, and 'fournir une photo récente de l'enfant'. The Kids-ID instructions import the eID photo rules wholesale, including the eID's live-enrollment exception, so a commune with live enrollment may photograph the child at the desk instead; ask when you book.
- CheckSame geometry as the adult card: 31 to 36 mm head on a 35 x 45 mm print, light plain background, no pronounced blue or red, at most six months old.
- CheckLikeness is policed harder for children: parents must request a new Kids-ID before the three-year validity ends if the child's face has changed, and the official sees the photo from the last card on screen at every request.
- CheckThe Kids-ID stores the photo in the RFID chip and prints a perforated copy of it on the back of the card, but takes no fingerprints ('La Kids-ID ne contient pas les empreintes digitales').
- CheckAllow three weeks for the normal procedure (6.60 euros plus communal tax); the fast procedure costs noticeably more, so a rejected photo is expensive if you are travelling soon.

Quotes are in French. Quotes 1-4 are from the IBZ citizen page 'Kids-ID' at source.url, read directly (sources/be/ibz-kids-id-fr.txt). Quotes 5-8 are from the IG eID (sources/be/ibz-instructions-generales-eid-2026-04-30-pdf.txt, section 5.6.3). The bridge is section 2.2.2 'Photographie' of the IG Kids-ID, version coordonnée du 30 avril 2026 (PDF https://www.ibz.rrn.fgov.be/sites/default/files/documents/fr/documents-d-identite/kids-id/instructions/IG-KIDS-ID-FR-30042026.pdf, dump sources/be/ibz-instructions-kids-id-pdf.txt), which states that the provisions on photographs for the children's electronic identity documents are identical to those of the electronic identity cards; that sentence is not quoted verbatim because the text dump drops the apostrophes in 'd'identité'. Because the import is unqualified, the eID's live-enrollment exception (IG eID 5.6, quoted on be/id-card) is taken to apply to the Kids-ID as well; the Kids-ID pages do not restate it. Head fractions 31-36 mm / 45 mm. child.underAge 12 is the document's own age limit, not a relaxation; no relaxed child rules are published. headCovering, glasses, editing and dpi as for be/id-card. ibz.rrn.fgov.be is not matched by the validator host rule; see the file header.
