Bolivia Visa Photo (4 x 4 cm, red background): size and requirements
The Bolivia Visa Photo size is 40 x 40 mm (1.57 x 1.57 inches). Fondo rojo (red background); head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Last verified 2026-10-10 against Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores del Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia (Cancillería), 'Servicios' > Solicitud de visas (Visa de Turismo and the other visa categories).
For the photograph filed with a Bolivian visa application at a Bolivian consulate or embassy by a foreign national of a Group II or III country: tourist, objeto determinado (work, volunteering, study exchange, religious, health, family), student, multiple-entry and medical-companion visas all list a current 4 x 4 photo on a red background; the humanitarian visa asks only for a current photograph. Not for the Bolivian passport, the cédula or a residence permit issued inside Bolivia.

What trips people up
- CheckRed, not white: 'Fotografía actual 4 x 4 (fondo rojo).' (a current 4 x 4 photo on a red background) is the tourist-visa item, and the objeto determinado, student, multiple and medical-companion lists repeat 'Fotografía actual 4×4 (fondo rojo).' or '(4×4 fondo rojo)'. A standard white 35 x 45 mm print does not match; we render a square 40 x 40 mm photo on red.
- CheckSquare 4 x 4 cm: the Cancillería writes the size without a unit; we read it as 4 x 4 centimetres (40 x 40 mm), the only plausible unit for a visa print, and flag that reading here. The humanitarian visa and the trafficking-victim permanence list say only 'Fotografía actual.' - a current photograph with no size; the medical-companion permanence list keeps the 4×4 red-background rule.
I nationals need no tourist visa and no photo.
- CheckOther tourist-visa items: 'Pasaporte con vigencia mínima de seis (6) meses.', 'Formulario de Declaración Jurada de solicitud de Visa.', a yellow-fever certificate for high-risk zones, itinerary or return tickets, 'Carta de invitación de persona con domicilio legal en Bolivia registrada y autorizada por la Dirección General de Migración (DIGEMIG), o reserva de hospedaje.' and proof of funds.
- CheckVisas are consular: 'La visa es un documento de viaje emitido por los Consulados y Embajadas de Bolivia en el exterior ...'; the online Sistema de Solicitud Visas (visas.cancilleria.gob.bo) is login-gated, so its upload format was not read - take the print to the consulate and ask whether it also wants a file.
- CheckNo head measurement is published; we apply the ICAO Doc 9303 70-80 % crown-to-chin band to the 40 mm height, flagged as a default, not a Bolivian figure.
Good to know before you pay
A studio that can print a 4 x 4 cm photo on a red background meets the wording; use our file if you want to shoot it yourself and have it printed at that size.
