Danish Passport Photo (pas, 35 x 45 mm, Rigspolitiet rules): size and requirements
The Danish Passport Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Uden motiver og i ensartet lys farve, f.eks. lys blå eller lys grå; ingen skygger på baggrunden; head 67 to 80 percent of the photo height. Last verified 2026-10-07 against borger.dk (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen) / Rigspolitiet (Danish National Police), 'Krav til billeder til pas og kørekort'.
For the single printed pasfoto you bring to Borgerservice in any Danish kommune for a new or renewed Danish passport, adult or child, when the kommune does not photograph you itself. Not for a Danish kørekort (same rules, separate page), and not for a residence card, which the immigration authorities photograph.

What trips people up
- CheckCheck your kommune before buying: 'I nogle kommuner er det muligt at få taget dit billede i borgerservice.' Where that is offered (borger.dk's kørekort page says such Borgerservice photos are taken 'mod betaling', for a fee) you need no photo at all; everywhere else you must bring 'et vellignende foto, som lever op til kravene til foto i pas'.
- CheckThe Danish head is measured to the top of the hair, not the skull: 30 to 36 mm 'fra hagespids til hårtop' on the 45 mm print (67 to 80 percent). Tall hair therefore counts towards the maximum, unlike in Switzerland or Austria.
- CheckBackground in one uniform light colour, light blue or light grey being the examples given; people with white or light hair, or a light headscarf, need a background in sharp contrast. Colour or black and white are both accepted.
- CheckAll rules apply to children too ('Alle regler gælder også for børn'); only 'i særlige tilfælde' can single requirements be waived, and that decision is taken at the counter where you apply, not in advance.
- CheckHead covering only for religious reasons, with forehead, chin and cheekbones visible; caps and hats are shown as rejected. Glasses are fine if the frame leaves the eyes fully uncovered and the lenses have no tint or reflection.
- CheckYou must appear in person, fingerprints are taken from age 12, and a child under 18 must come along with its own ID and photo. Renewing costs double if you no longer have the old passport.
Good to know before you pay
If your kommune photographs passport applicants at Borgerservice, book that and bring nothing.

Quotes are in Danish. Quotes 1-4 are from the borger.dk page 'Ansøg om eller forny dansk pas' at source.url, read directly (sources/dk/borger-ansoeg-om-eller-forny-dansk-pas.txt), which links 'Politiets krav til pasfoto' https://politi.dk/pas/krav-til-pas-og-koerekortfoto (sources/dk/politi-krav-til-pas-og-koerekortfoto.txt, a page holding only the poster). Quote 12 is from the borger.dk kørekort page https://www.borger.dk/transport-trafik-rejser/Biler-og-koerekort/koerekort/forny-dit-koerekort (sources/dk/borger-forny-dit-koerekort.txt): the passport page itself says nothing about a fee for the Borgerservice photo. Quotes 5-11 are from that poster PDF https://politi.dk/-/media/mediefiler/landsdaekkende-dokumenter/lov-og-information/pas/krav-til-pasfoto/krav-til-pasbilleder.pdf (text dump sources/dk/politi-krav-til-pasbilleder-pdf.txt; the dump loses the fi/fl ligatures in 'reflekser' and splits 'lukket' and 'kontrast', so those sentences are not quoted). Head fractions 30-36 mm / 45 mm. maxPhotoAgeMonths is left undefined: the sources say only 'vellignende'. headCovering: the source names religious reasons only; the type has no religious-only value. glasses 'allowed-no-glare' follows 'glassene uden toner eller reflekser'. editing 'background-replacement-ok': no retouching rule is published. dpi 600 is our rendering choice ('meget høj opløsning' only). child is left undefined because the rules are the same for children. borger.dk and politi.dk are not matched by the validator host rule; see the file header.
