What trips people up
- CheckThe only published rules are 'colour' and 'recent': 'A scanned color copy of the passport and a color passport-sized photo are required.' and, for the tourist visa, 'Recent passport-size photo of the applicant.' No pixel size, file size, background or head rule is stated, so we render the ICAO 35 x 45 mm frame (413 x 531 px) with a 70 to 80 per cent head on white.
- CheckThe photo is uploaded as a copy with the passport scan: 'Copy of the following documents is mandatory.' Your passport must be 'valid for at least 6 months from the intended date of entry to Ethiopia'.
- CheckValidity runs from your stated arrival date, not the issue date: 'Ethiopian e-visas are only valid as of the applicant's intended arrival date specified on the application, not as of the date of issuance.'
- CheckFees are non-refundable and, for the tourist visa, USD 62 (30 days) or USD 152 (90 days) single entry; processing is normally 3 days.
- CheckBusiness visitors must choose the Business and Related Studies Visa, and no business visa is issued to under-18s; children of business travellers get tourist visas, each with its own photo.
Known quirks of the official upload
- NoteApply on www.evisa.gov.et; the approval is emailed and the visa only becomes valid from the arrival date entered in the application.
Good to know before you pay
