The Finnish Driving Licence Photo size is 36 x 47 mm (1.42 x 1.85 inches). Not stated by Traficom; the police passport-photo instructions ask for a light, neutral, monochromatic background, best light grey; head 68 to 77 percent of the photo height. Last verified 2026-10-07 against Traficom (Finnish Transport and Communications Agency), 'Driving licence permit' and 'Renew your driving licence'.

For the two printed passport photos Traficom's service provider Ajovarma takes with a driving licence permit application at the counter, when your police passport photo cannot be reused. Not for the online renewal in Traficom My e-Services, which uses the photo already in the police register, and not for a passport.

Only the Ajovarma counter route takes prints; the online renewal uses your police photo. If you do go to Ajovarma without a passport or ID card to reuse, print two copies on photo paper. See the Finland documents we can prepare.

What trips people up

  • Check
    Online renewal needs no photo from you: 'When you log in to the service, you can see your facial photograph and signature obtained from the passport photo register of the police.' If no photo is on file, or you refuse to use it, 'you cannot renew your driving licence electronically' and must go to Ajovarma.
  • Check
    At Ajovarma bring '2 passport photos', unless you hold a valid passport or identity card and allow its photo to be used, or you previously gave Traficom a photo for a licence or another road traffic permit card and are still recognisable.
  • Check
    A photo studio's retrieval code is useless here: 'Traficom cannot use the photo code provided by a photo studio for a driving licence.' You need actual prints.
  • Check
    Traficom publishes no photo geometry; the counter accepts ordinary Finnish passport photos, so we apply the police 500 x 653 px / 36 x 47 mm frame with the head 32 to 36 mm crown to chin.
  • Check
    Renewal is possible no more than six months before expiry; a medical report (F122) is needed in some age and category cases and is separate from the photo.
