What trips people up

  • Check
The Fahrerlaubnis-Verordnung simply points at the Passverordnung, so the Führerschein photo follows the passport Fotomustertafel: 35 x 45 mm, face 70 to 80 percent, plain contrasting background.
  • Check
The May 2025 digital-only rule names Reisepass, Personalausweis and eAT. The BMI FAQ says self-made digital or paper photos may still be used 'für viele sonstige Ausweisdokumente' without listing the Führerschein, and FeV § 21 still asks for a Lichtbild enclosed with the application; we read that as the paper route staying open, but confirm with your Fahrerlaubnisbehörde.
  • Check
The Fahrerlaubnisbehörde may grant exceptions from the photo layout (Ausnahmen ... zulassen); do not assume a non-biometric photo will pass without asking.
  • Check
FeV § 21 allows the application to be filed in writing or electronically (schriftlich oder in elektronischer Form); ask the Fahrerlaubnisbehörde or Fahrschule whether they want a print or a scan before paying for prints.

August 2021 (BGBl. I S. 3682) geändert worden ist, entspricht

Quotes are in German and translated on the page. Geometry from the BMI Fotomustertafel at source.url. The FeV § 21 (3) Nr. 2 quotes are from https://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/fev_2010/__21.html, read via a Wayback snapshot of 2025-09-15 because gesetze-im-internet.de did not answer direct requests (sources/de/gesetze-fev-21.txt). The 35 x 45 mm size is the Passverordnung paper format (PassV § 16 (3)). The 'sonstige Ausweisdokumente' sentence is from the Personalausweisportal FAQ; it does not name the Führerschein, so the statement that the licence still takes a paper photo is our reading of FeV § 21 plus that sentence. The one-print figure is the single Lichtbild named in FeV § 21. Head coverings: religious reasons only in the Fotomustertafel (our type has no religious-only value); light grey is our rendering choice.
