Luxembourg Passport Photo (captured at the commune or BPVL; studio ICAO photo optional, 35 x 45 mm reference): size and requirements
The Luxembourg Passport Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Not stated on the procedure page; white is our rendering choice for the reference frame; head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-10 against Le Gouvernement du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, Guichet.lu, 'Demander un passeport biométrique – résident' (Bureau des passeports, visas et légalisations, MAEE), with the ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 reference frame.
For a Luxembourg biometric passport applied for by a resident at the Bureau de la population of their commune or at the Bureau des passeports, visas et légalisations (BPVL) in Luxembourg City, for adults and children. The counter captures the facial image; the only alternative the procedure names is a professional photographer's ICAO-compliant print, so this page is a reference frame only. Not for the non-resident route, the carte d'identité or a visa.
Let the commune or BPVL take the picture at your appointment, or bring a professional photographer's ICAO print; a file made at home or by us is not in the list of accepted documents. See all Luxembourg documents.

What trips people up
- CheckCaptured at the counter: 'La photo d’identité peut être prise directement à la commune ou au Bureau des passeports, visas et légalisations.' (the identity photo can be taken directly at the commune or at the BPVL). The communes' population offices 'disposent d’un équipement spécial à cet effet'.
- CheckStudio only as the alternative: the document list ends with 'éventuellement, la photo réalisée par un photographe de métier conforme aux normes établies par l’Organisation de l'aviation civile internationale' (optionally, a photo made by a professional photographer conforming to ICAO standards). A home-made print is not in the list.
- CheckICAO guideline: the page links the MAEE's English 'Critères à respecter pour la photo' (ISO/ICAO photo guidelines PDF) for photographers; we did not download it, so the 35 x 45 mm frame and 70-80 % head here are the ICAO Doc 9303 text ('Submitted portraits should be 45.0 mm x 35.0 mm (1.77 in x 1.38 in) in dimension.'), flagged as such.
- CheckCollection is in person at the BPVL (6, rue de l'Ancien Athénée) or, if chosen at application, at the commune; the receipt from the application is handed back.
