Dutch Driving Licence Photo (rijbewijs, 35 x 45 mm at the gemeente): size and requirements
The Dutch Driving Licence Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Lichtgrijs, lichtblauw of wit; egaal; éénkleurig; head 58 to 67 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-07 against RDW (Dienst Wegverkeer) with the Rijksoverheid Fotomatrix 2020.
For the colour pasfoto you bring to the gemeente for a first rijbewijs, or for a renewal you choose not to do online. Not for the RDW online renewal, which only accepts a digital photo sent in by an RDW-fotograaf or approved photo booth, and not for a passport or ID card (same photo rules, different counter).
Use our photo only if you apply at the gemeente counter; for the RDW online renewal go to an RDW-fotograaf or approved photo booth instead. See the Netherlands documents we can prepare.

What trips people up
- CheckTwo routes, two rules: at the gemeente you hand in a normal colour pasfoto; online at the RDW 'gewone pasfoto's kunt u niet gebruiken' and only an RDW-fotograaf or approved booth can send the photo. Decide the route before you buy a photo.
- CheckThe online route gives you an aanvraagcode by e-mail or SMS within minutes of the photographer's upload; the code is valid 6 months and you need the DigiD app with ID-check, or DigiD login with your identiteitskaart or rijbewijs and PIN ('Inloggen met SMS-controle is niet voldoende').
- CheckSame Fotomatrix as the passport: 26 to 30 mm head on a 35 x 45 mm print, light grey, light blue or white background, not edited, printed on smooth photo paper.
- CheckThe RDW online route also requires a Dutch licence issued after 1 October 2006 and a BRP address; if you fail any condition you are back to the gemeente with a print anyway.
