For the single printed pasfoto handed in at the gemeente with a Nederlandse identiteitskaart (NIK) application. Not for a verblijfsdocument from the IND, which photographs you at its desk, and not for the online rijbewijs renewal, which needs an RDW photographer.

What trips people up
- CheckIdentical rules to the Dutch passport: one Fotomatrix applies to the paspoort, identiteitskaart and rijbewijs ('De pasfoto voor een paspoort, identiteitskaart of rijbewijs moet voldoen aan een aantal eisen').
- CheckHead 26 to 30 mm chin to crown on the 45 mm print: noticeably smaller than the 70 to 80 percent most other countries ask for.
- CheckLight grey, light blue or white background, one flat colour, no gradient and no shadow behind the head.
- CheckThe ID card photo is printed in black and white on the card but stored in colour in the chip, so the submitted print must be in colour with a natural skin tone.
- CheckThe same photo as in your previous document is 'bij voorkeur niet' (preferably not) reused, and in any case must be under 6 months old.
