What trips people up
- CheckThe portal wants a JPEG with the 35x45 proportions, not a square: 'The photo must be rectangular (with the 35x45 aspect ratio).' and 'The photo must have no frames.' No pixel or kilobyte limit is published; 413 x 531 px is our rendering of 35 x 45 mm at 300 dpi.
- CheckThe face, not the head, is sized: 'The face must take up 70-80 percent of the photo.' The head must be centred and fully shown 'from the top of the hairline or the crown of the head to the tip of the chin', with the nose on the symmetry line.
- CheckBackground is 'plain light-colored' with no shadows; white is fine but not required. Uniform lighting, no flash reflections, no red eyes, natural skin tone.
- CheckSix months maximum: 'The photo must be no more than six months old as of the date of the application and reflect your current appearance.' You must be alone, with no chair back, pictures or other people visible.
- CheckGlasses may stay on if the eyes are clearly visible: no flash reflection on the lenses, no tinted lenses, frames must not cover the eyes even partly; lighter frames are recommended.
- CheckHead covering only on religious grounds and only if it 'does not conceal facial features'; the face must be visible 'from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead'.
- CheckChildren under six pay no consular fee but still need their own application and photo: 'Children under the age of six by the date of the submission of the application are exempt from the consular fee.'
Known quirks of the official upload
- NoteBoth uploads are JPEG only: 'Digital photo of your passport data in JPEG format.' and 'Digital photo of your face in JPEG format that meets the requirements .'
- NoteIf the consular officer finds a problem the status becomes 'Correction required' and you re-upload and resubmit; only paid applications are processed.
Good to know before you pay
If you already have a JPEG passport photo in 35x45 proportions, taken within six months on a plain light background with your face filling 70 to 80 per cent of the frame, upload that; the portal checks the photo, not its origin.

Quote 1 keeps the page's stray space before the full stop. head 0.7-0.8 is the page's 'face must take up 70-80 percent of the photo', read as crown-to-chin against image height; the page does not define 'face' more precisely. background 'light' from 'plain light-colored background'. digital 413 x 531 px is our 300 dpi rendering of the stated 35x45 aspect ratio; the portal publishes no pixel or kilobyte limit, and format 'jpeg' is the page's own JPEG rule. headCovering 'religious-medical-only' is the nearest type value to the religious-only exception. child left undefined: the page relaxes nothing for children (only the fee). glasses 'allowed-no-glare' from quote 6.
