What trips people up
- CheckTwo identical prints: 'When applying for an e-passport, an applicant must submit two identical color photographs taken within the last six months.' Individual filers who upload digitally still attach one colour paper photo identical to the upload, because the printed application sheet is black and white.
- CheckHead band is written in mm: 'The size of the head from chin to crown must be between 32 mm and 36 mm (1.26 inches and 1.42 inches, thus, the face taken up 70-80 percent of the photograph), and the head must be evenly centered in the photograph.'
- CheckUpload file: 'the image must be in JPG or JPEG format and in RGB color mode (at least 24 bit), with file size no larger than 5 MB and an image resolution of at least 531 pixels in height and 413 pixels in width.'
- CheckMouth closed unless you cannot: 'A neutral expression (mouth closed) and natural skin tone are required. Applicants who are unable to close their mouths are excluded from this requirement.'
- CheckGlasses: 'The photograph must show the eyes clearly with no reflection or glare on the glasses. Please avoid tinted glasses (exceptions may be made for the visually impaired).' Thick frames and frames covering the eyes are to be avoided.
- CheckNo coloured contacts: 'Colored or circle contact lenses are not allowed, as they may lead to visa rejection or difficulty in immigration clearance due to the significant difference between the photo and the natural eye color.'
- CheckNo uniform: 'Please do not wear a military or police uniform or camouflage clothing.' Head coverings only for religious or medical reasons, with the face visible from chin to forehead and both edges.
- CheckEars, moles, birthmarks and scars must be visible; an applicant with microtia may cover the ears with hair as long as both edges of the face show. No hair over the eyebrows or eyes.
- CheckChildren: 'Photographs for children must show their head and shoulders only (no chairs, toys, pacifiers, or other people should be visible).' No relaxed geometry or age threshold is published, so no child block is set here.
- CheckNo editing: 'Alteration of the digital image is not permitted.' and 'Resampling of the original image or alteration of the image's size before printing is not permitted.' Mirrored or composite photos are rejected and can fail airport e-gates.
- CheckPaper quality matters: thin photo paper or poor print quality gets the photo rejected and the applicant must supply two new prints.
Good to know before you pay
A Taiwanese photo studio produces the two 35 x 45 mm prints to this exact sheet and can hand you the JPG for the BOCA upload; our file only helps if you shoot at home and need the 413 x 531 px crop.
