What trips people up

  • Check
The only published photo rule is its age: the Tourist Visas page lists 'Photograph taken within the last six months' among the required documents (other category pages were not checked). No pixel size, file size, background or head rule appears on the pages read or in the readable text of the English user manual (its screenshots were not OCR'd), so we render the ICAO 35 x 45 mm frame (413 x 531 px) with a 70 to 80 per cent head on white.
  • Check
The photo is uploaded in Step 2 (Applicant Information), the second of its three sub-sections ('Upload your photograph'), after the passport biodata page and before Step 3 (Travel Information) and Step 4 (Supporting Document); do not merge it into a PDF with other papers.
  • Check
You can only apply from outside Thailand: 'It is important to note that you are only able to apply if you are currently not in Thailand.' Applicants no longer hand in passports or documents at the embassy; everything goes through the portal.
  • Check
Each embassy or consulate may add its own list: 'Please check the relevant embassy/consulate's website for specifically required documents', and the mission may call you for an interview or more documents. Visa fees are non-refundable ('Please also note that the visa fees are non-refundable').
  • Check
Approval arrives as 'a confirmation e-mail ... which can be printed out for presenting to airlines and Thai immigration officials'; the portal says nothing about how the uploaded photo is used afterwards.

Known portal issues

  • Note

No pixel or file-size limit shown for the photo upload

Create an account, then in Step 2 upload the biodata page and the photograph as separate sub-sections. Read the fix
  • Note
The portal is for applicants outside Thailand only; the e-Visa confirmation is sent by e-mail.

Good to know before you pay

If you have a recent passport photo file from a studio taken within the last six months, upload that; the portal states no size or background beyond the age.

Source and verification

VerifiedLast checked 2026-10-08Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, Thai e-Visa Official Website, 'Tourist Visas' and 'Guide to Thailand E-Visa Application', with ICAO Doc 9303

No national rule published; ICAO 9303 standard applies. Last checked 2026-10-08 (archived copy dated 2024-09-12) at Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand, Thai e-Visa Official Website, 'Tourist Visas' and 'Guide to Thailand E-Visa Application', with ICAO Doc 9303.

  • Photograph taken within the last six months
  • Biodata page of Passport or Travel Document
  • Please check the relevant embassy/consulate's website for specifically required documents.
  • Upload your photograph
  • It is important to note that you are only able to apply if you are currently not in Thailand.
  • E-Visa applicants are no longer required to submit passports and supporting documents in person at the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate-General.
  • All applications are subject to approval and the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General may request for an interview or additional documents.
  • Please also note that the visa fees are non-refundable.
  • After the e-Visa application has been approved, a confirmation e-mail will be sent to applicants, which can be printed out for presenting to airlines and Thai immigration officials when traveling to Thailand.
  • Submitted portraits should be 45.0 mm x 35.0 mm (1.77 in x 1.38 in) in dimension.
  • The crown-to-chin portion of the facial image shall be 70 to 80 per cent of the longest dimension defined for Zone V, maintaining the aspect ratio between the crown-to-chin and ear-to-ear details of the face of the holder.

Quotes 1-3 are from the Tourist Visas page at source.url (sources/th/thaievisa-tourist-visa.txt). Quote 4 is a sub-section heading of the English user manual PDF https://www.thaievisa.go.th/static/English-Manual.pdf (sources/th/thaievisa-english-manual.txt, readable text lines kept, image/binary lines stripped; the words are split across lines in the PDF). In the manual it sits under chapter '3. Step 2: Applicant Information' ('Fill and upload your information in 3 sections': biodata page, photograph, information), followed by '4. Step 3: Travel Information' and '5. Step 4: Supporting Document'; the leading numbers are the manual's chapter numbers, not portal step numbers, and the manual contains no '3.2'. Because most of the manual's instructions are screenshots that were not OCR'd, the absence of a pixel, size or background rule is asserted only for its readable text. Quotes 5-9 are from the portal home/FAQ page https://www.thaievisa.go.th/faq (sources/th/thaievisa-faq.txt; quote 9 is also on the Tourist Visas page). The six-month rule is quoted from the Tourist Visas page only; no other category page was saved. Nothing in the saved sources says how the uploaded photo is used after approval. Quotes 10-11 are ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 (sources/icao/, Wayback 2024-09-12) and supply the size and head band, which the portal does not state; confidence is therefore 'icao-default'. digital 413 x 531 px (35 x 45 mm at 300 dpi) is our rendering choice, not a portal limit; min equals target and no maximum or KB limit is set because none is published. format 'jpeg' is our choice; the portal names no format. background 'white', glasses and head-covering values are ICAO-style defaults. maxPhotoAgeMonths 6 from the published rule. editing 'background-replacement-ok': no retouching rule is published. child is left undefined.
