Photo size converter
Choose two photo sizes, for example 35 x 45 mm and 2 x 2 in: the converter draws them to the same scale and works out how much the first must be scaled and trimmed to become the second.
Different shapes: width to height is 0.78 for the first size and 1.00 for the second, so scaling alone cannot turn one into the other.
Scale by 145.7% so it covers 51 x 51 mm (2 x 2 in), then trim 14.6 mm (22%) from the height. Trimming changes how much of the photo the head fills, so check the head size rule of the new document afterwards.
To keep the whole photo instead, scale by 113.3% so it fits inside; that leaves 11.3 mm (22%) of the width empty; check whether the new document allows an empty border before using a padded photo.
How it works
- Choose the size you have and the size you need.
- The photo is scaled until it covers the new size; whatever overhangs is trimmed.
- Check the new document's head-size rule afterwards, because trimming changes how much of the photo the head fills.
Limits and when not to use this tool
- Converting a size does not re-frame the face: after trimming, the head may fill more or less of the photo than the new document allows, so check its head-size rule or run the photo through the free photo checker.
- The converter compares the two named sizes only; it does not open or change your photo. To make a photo in a new size, use /make/ with the document you need.
- Digital sizes are drawn as printed at 300 DPI for comparison; the portal that asked for a pixel size does not care about millimetres.
