Countries where online photo services are not accepted
Some authorities do not merely regulate the photo; they regulate who takes and prints it, and an ordinary online photo service cannot satisfy that rule, including this one. Photos for these documents are still sold online, and they account for a share of the one-star reviews we studied. Our position is published in the product itself: for these documents the tool shows the authority's own wording before any checkout, offers a 'Find a photographer' link first, and the refund guarantee does not cover them if you continue regardless. This guide names the countries and the exact rules.
Canada: taken in person by a commercial photographer
IRCC's rule for the Canadian passport is categorical: photos must 'be taken in person by a commercial photographer or photo studio', professionally printed, and it does not accept photos printed at home or on heavyweight paper. The lab may also need to stamp its name, address and the date on the back. A reviewer of another service quoted the refusal verbatim: photos processed by online photo web services are not acceptable because they are not taken in person by a commercial photographer. No file we or anyone else sells you changes that; book a studio. Where our tool still helps is before the visit, checking head size and lighting so one studio session is enough, and for IRCC's separate online renewal upload, which has its own digital rules.
Australia: the print process is the rule
The Australian Passport Office does not recommend online passport photo services or mobile apps, warning they may put you in danger of identity fraud, and requires prints produced by dye sublimation on heavyweight glossy paper of at least 200 gsm for the Australian passport; an inkjet print, even on photo paper, is explicitly not accepted. A compliant file printed the wrong way is therefore still a refusal. If you use a file at all, it must go through a lab or pharmacy kiosk that prints dye-sublimation; most applicants are better served by Australia Post's photo service, which the APO steers people toward.
Ireland: only the untouched camera frame
Ireland accepts home photos for Passport Online, but only as the camera produced them: not digitally enhanced or changed, no cropping, no zoom, no scan of a print. Users of editing services report the portal refusing files that were 'cropped, enlarged, enhanced'. That outlaws most of what a photo service does to a file, including background replacement. Our paid files are cropped and re-saved, so they are not the file to upload for Ireland. What helps is the free photo checker: it measures the camera's own file (head height, lighting, background, pixels) against the published guidelines, and you then upload that original file yourself.
How the warning works in our tool
Every document in our dataset carries an eligibility verdict drawn from the authority's own wording. Where it is negative or restricted, starting the flow brings up a plain interstitial headed 'Before you continue: what the authority asks for', quoting the official sentence, with 'Find a photographer' as the primary action and 'Continue anyway' as the secondary one. Continuing is your call, for example to use the checker before a studio visit, but the guarantee does not cover such documents, because selling certainty we cannot provide is exactly the behaviour this page exists to warn about. The same note appears on each spec page, so you see it before any photo is taken, and each country page, for example Canada, lists the documents we can prepare.
The quick list
Where to check before spending anything, here or elsewhere.
- 1.Canadian passport: studio only; also one photo signed by your guarantor on the back.
- 2.Canadian visitor visa: if you give biometrics, no photo is needed at all; IRCC photographs you at the collection point.
- 3.Australian passport: dye-sublimation lab print; no inkjet, no home printing.
- 4.Irish Passport Online: home photo allowed, but only the unedited camera frame.
- 5.Anywhere else: read the eligibility note at the top of the document's requirements page before paying anyone.
Frequently asked questions
Why do you sell for these documents at all?
For Canada and Australia the tool shows the authority's rule before the flow starts; continuing exists for people who want the measured checks before a studio or lab visit, and the refund guarantee does not cover those documents. For Ireland, use the free checker on the camera's own file and upload that file yourself; our paid files are cropped, which Passport Online refuses.
