The French Residence Permit Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Le fond doit être uni, de couleur claire (bleu clair ou gris clair par exemple). Le fond blanc est interdit.; head 71 to 80 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-07 against Service-Public.gouv.fr (DILA) with the Ministère de l'Intérieur (ANEF).
For a carte de résident requested through the ANEF online portal, which asks for the e-photo code printed on a planche photo from an approved photographer or booth; other titres de séjour requested in ANEF use the same e-photo field. Not for a long-stay visa applied for through France-Visas before arrival.

What trips people up
- CheckThe ANEF form has a field for the e-photo code, not for a file upload; the code only exists on the planche produced by an approved photographer or booth.
- CheckUsers report (our pain-point research, PP-20, not an official source) prefectures refusing paper photos brought to the appointment when the online file lacked the code: 'prefecture wouldn't accept the photos without the iphoto code'.
