Iranian Passport Photo (ICAO 35 x 45 mm reference; no readable national rule): size and requirements
The Iranian Passport Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Not stated by any readable Iranian source; white is our rendering choice; head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-09 against Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, 'Overview of consular services' (empty shell when read) and e-Visa portal, with ICAO Doc 9303.
For the Iranian passport (گذرنامه) issued by the Iranian Police immigration and passport department inside Iran, or by Iranian missions abroad. No national photo rule could be read, so this spec is the ICAO Doc 9303 reference frame only. Not for an Iranian visa (see ir/e-visa) or the national ID card.
Check with the passport office or Iranian mission before buying: we could not read Iran's photo rule, so treat our 35 x 45 mm ICAO print as a best guess, not an official format. See the Iran documents we can prepare.

What trips people up
- CheckNo national rule was found. The police passport sites (epolice.ir) and the national services portals (my.gov.ir, irangov.ir) refuse connections from this network, en.mfa.gov.ir has no passport page and its consular overview is an empty shell. Every value here is the ICAO Doc 9303 reference frame (35 x 45 mm, head 70 to 80 per cent, six months), flagged as such.
- CheckAsk the passport office or Iranian mission for its own photo instructions before printing; Iranian offices are known to set dress and head-covering rules for the photo that we could not read, and the ICAO frame may not match their size.
- CheckThe MFA's visa portal, the only Iranian photo rule we could read, says for visas: 'The acceptance of your photo is at the discretion of the I.R.Iran Embassy or consulate where you apply.' Expect similar discretion for passports.
- CheckICAO's own rule, which Iranian passports follow as machine-readable travel documents: 'Submitted portraits should be 45.0 mm x 35.0 mm (1.77 in x 1.38 in) in dimension.'
Source and verification
No national rule published; ICAO 9303 standard applies. Last checked 2026-10-09 (archived copy dated 2024-09-12) at Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, 'Overview of consular services' (empty shell when read) and e-Visa portal, with ICAO Doc 9303.
The acceptance of your photo is at the discretion of the I.R.Iran Embassy or consulate where you apply.
Submitted portraits should be 45.0 mm x 35.0 mm (1.77 in x 1.38 in) in dimension.
The crown-to-chin portion of the facial image shall be 70 to 80 per cent of the longest dimension defined for Zone V, maintaining the aspect ratio between the crown-to-chin and ear-to-ear details of the face of the holder.
A submitted portrait shall have been captured within the last six months before application, as outlined in [ISO/IEC 39794-5].
Where the portrait is supplied to the issuing authority in digital form, the requirements specified by the issuing authority must be adhered to.
No Iranian passport photo rule could be read on 2026-10-09: www.epolice.ir, my.gov.ir and irangov.ir return curl 000 (connection refused/reset) directly and through the text proxy; en.mfa.gov.ir/portal/visa is 404 and the 'Overview of consular services' page at source.url renders as a 258-character shell (sources/ir/mfa-overview-consular-services.txt). source.url is kept as the nearest official page; it contributes no quote. Quote 1 is from the MFA e-Visa 'Photo Requirements' page (sources/ir/mfa-evisa-photo-requirements.txt) and concerns visas, cited only to show the authority's discretion. Quotes 2-5 are ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 (sources/icao/, Wayback 2024-09-12) and supply every geometry value; archiveSnapshot is that excerpt's date. eligibility.officialWording is the ICAO sentence (quote 5) because no Iranian sentence about who takes the photo exists in the saved sources; 'restricted' records that acceptance of an own photo is unknown. background 'white', dpi 300, glasses and headCovering are rendering defaults; printsRequired and child undefined.
