Ireland photo requirements
Ireland photo requirements are set by Passport Service, Department of Foreign Affairs. We publish 2 documents: 2 passports. The most common print size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 in x 1.77 in); 1 document accepts a digital upload. Each page quotes the official rule for size, head height, background and file, links the source we read, and shows the date we last checked it (most recently 2026-10-12).
Passports
- Irish Passport Photo (digital, Passport Online)For the digital photo uploaded to Passport Online for an Irish Passport Book or Passport Card, including renewals and first-time applications made online. Not for the paper application form, which takes four printed photos, and not for a UK passport, which has its own gov.uk rules.1200 x 1596 pxcompletely plainverified 2026-10-07
- Irish Passport Photo (printed, paper application, 35 x 45 mm)For the four identical printed photos sent with a paper Irish passport application form (Post Passport, or a paper form at an embassy). Not for Passport Online, which takes one digital photo, and not for a Passport Card: the page names only the Passport Book for the paper form and lists the Card under online applications, so we read the Card as online only.35 x 45 mmcompletely plainverified 2026-10-07

We are an independent service, not a government website. Applying for a passport or visa is done with your government; we only prepare the photo.
