The Italian Electronic ID Card Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Lo sfondo della foto deve essere uniforme. For the printed fototessera handed to the Comune when requesting a Carta di Identità Elettronica (CIE), in Italy or at a consulate. Not for the passport, which the Polizia di Stato wants on a white background only, and not for the Agenda CIE digital upload, whose pixel rules are not published.

What trips people up
- CheckThe Comune digitises your print with an acquisition device, so the eye line must fall 23 to 31 mm above the bottom edge and both ear lobes must be visible for the capture to work.
- CheckDo not crop to remove the background or straighten the head, and do not retouch or recolour: La foto non deve essere ritagliata per escludere lo sfondo o per raddrizzare la testa.
- CheckLight blue, beige, light brown, light grey or white backgrounds are all accepted (the page lists them as preferences for contrast), which is more lenient than the passport's white-only rule; we default to light grey.
- CheckHead coverings are allowed for religious, cultural or medical reasons as long as the face is clearly shown; coloured lenses are banned.
- CheckIf you booked through Agenda CIE and uploaded the photo there, you do not need a print at all (salvo che ... abbia caricato la fototessera in formato digitale).
