The Japanese My Number Card Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches), or 827 x 1063 pixels for online upload (minimum 480 x 480, maximum 6000 x 6000), file under 6.8 MB. 正面、無帽、無背景のもの (no colour is named; a plain light background is our rendering choice); head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. For the face photo on a My Number Card (個人番号カード) application, as a 45 x 35 mm print glued to the postal form or as a jpeg uploaded in the online application. Not for a Japanese passport (MOFA rules, separate page), a residence-status application or a driving licence.

What trips people up
- CheckTwo routes, two formats. By post: a 45 x 35 mm print with your name and date of birth written on the back. Online: jpeg, RGB colour (not CMYK), 20 KB to 7 MB, 480 to 6000 px in both width and height; 'ピクセルサイズ：幅480～6000ピクセル、高さ480～6000ピクセル'.
- CheckThe photo must be taken within the last six months, frontal, hatless, with no background; black and white is accepted ('白黒の写真でも可'). Images processed in editing software 'は、受け付けできない場合があります', and any edit that hinders face-to-face identity checks is banned outright.
- CheckJ-LIS publishes the head dimensions only as a diagram ('適切な写真の規格 単位：mm'), so we apply the ICAO 70 to 80 per cent crown-to-chin band; the card itself shrinks the photo to 27.5 x 22.0 mm.
- CheckGlasses frames over the eyes, very thick frames, reflections, wide headbands, hats and sunglasses that prevent identification are rejected; turbans and hijabs, and medically worn wigs, hats, eyepatches or sunglasses are allowed with the face outline visible.
- CheckIf you cannot meet the standard for an unavoidable reason (one eye that will not open, bandages, a wheelchair or tube in frame), write the specific reason in the name field of the postal form or phone the My Number hotline with your application ID; the municipal counter may ask about it at collection.
- CheckTypical rejection reasons beyond framing: red-eye, shadows on the face, blur, noise, printer dots, jaggies, and a face made small by very voluminous hair.

The crown-to-chin portion of the facial image shall be 70 to 80 per cent of the longest dimension defined for Zone V, maintaining the aspect ratio between the crown-to-chin and ear-to-ear details of the face of the holder.

Quote 15 is ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 (sources/icao/, Wayback 2024-09-12), supplying the head fraction because the J-LIS head figures exist only in a diagram image (flagged in statedAs). digital target 827 x 1063 px is our rendering of 35 x 45 mm at 600 dpi inside the published 480-6000 px range; maxKb 7000 renders the '7MB' ceiling. background 'light' is our rendering choice for '無背景'. glasses 'allowed-no-glare' follows the frame/reflection faults and the medical-only sunglasses rule. headCovering 'religious-medical-only' follows '宗教上又は医療上の理由'. neutralExpression and mouthClosed true follow '平常の顔貌と著しく異なる' being a fault plus ICAO defaults; the page does not say 'mouth closed'. editing 'unaltered-required' follows the processed-image warnings. child.underAge 1 is a type placeholder (see child.note). eligibility.officialWording joins the page's online-application lines with spaces for the validator's word count.
