Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-10 against Consular Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR - Lao eVisa portal FAQ 2.2 'What are the photo requirements for eVisa?' and the Information page.
For the photograph uploaded with a Lao tourist eVisa application on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal laoevisa.gov.la, used at the nine designated eVisa ports (Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, Friendship Bridges I, II and IV, Boten checkpoint and the Boten and Khamsavath railway stations). The portal publishes the size, colour, age and background but no head measurement, so the head band here is the ICAO reference. Not for a Lao passport, a visa on arrival or a sticker visa from a Lao embassy.

What trips people up
- CheckThe whole rule from FAQ 2.2 - 'Your photo must be:' 'Sized 4 x 6 cm.', 'In color.', 'Taken within the last 6 months.', 'With no shadows.', 'With a plain white background.', 'You must face the camera in the photo.', 'Have a neutral expression.', 'Have both eyes open.' The Information page repeats 'The size of the photograph must be 4x6 cm, as per ICAO Standard photograph:'.
- Check4 x 6 cm is taller than the usual 35 x 45 mm: a 3:4 passport crop will be rejected as the wrong ratio, so export the 2:3 frame we render. No pixel count, file type or file size is published for the upload, so 472 x 709 px JPEG at 300 dpi is our rendering choice.
- CheckThe 'Photospecs eVisa' sheet (photo_spec.jpg) shows twelve rejects with captions only: 'Blurred Photograph', 'Non-neutral expression', 'Face too small', 'Hair covering part of face', 'White background color' (a busy background), 'Reflection on glasses', 'Face covered' (the reject shows a face veil, the pass beside it a head scarf with the whole face visible), 'Overlit', 'No upside down photograph', 'Washed out', 'Tintes glasses', 'Glasses frame covering eyes'. It carries no numbers.
- CheckDocuments: 'scan-colored copies' of the 'Passport bio page' and the 'Photograph size 4x6 cm'; the passport must be valid 'for more than 180 days from the date of arrival' and only an 'Ordinary Passport' qualifies. 'Currently, you can only apply for Tourist Visa with eVisa.' and 'all applicants including children and infants must have a visa'.
- CheckTiming: processed 'within 03 working days'; apply no more than 60 days and at least 5 days before arrival; the approval letter is valid 60 days, the stay 30 days, single entry; print the approval letter (black and white is fine if the QR code is legible). Fees are non-refundable; groups of up to 20 per invoice.
- CheckIf the photo is wrong the portal e-mails a link to replace it: 'If your photo does not meet the requirements, you will have to provide new photographs before your application can be processed.'
