What trips people up
- CheckThis is the one Malaysian passport photo you can make yourself: 'One (1) piece of photo measuring 35mm x 50mm with a shadowless WHITE background.' It is not the usual 35 x 45 mm, so do not reuse a generic passport print.
- CheckThe face must measure 'a minimum of 25-30mm' (JIM's wording), which it equates to 50-60 % of the frame 'according to ICAO guidelines'; that is smaller than ICAO's adult 70-80 %, so leave more room above the head than you would for yourself.
- CheckShadowless background: shoot the child facing a window or soft light with the white sheet well behind them so no shadow falls on it.
- CheckFrom the fourth birthday the rule flips: the child is photographed at the counter with the Facial Live Capture device and no print is accepted.
- CheckThe same page bans hats, headwear and spectacles for the capture session; we apply the same to the under-4 print because JIM publishes no separate relaxation.
Good to know before you pay
If a studio already printed a 35 x 50 mm white-background photo with the face at least 25 to 30 mm tall (JIM's 'minimum of 25-30mm'), hand that in; nothing else is needed.

All quotes are from the English page at source.url, read directly via the text proxy (sources/my/imi-passport-malaysia.txt); the Malay original (sources/my/imi-passport-malaysia-ms.txt) reads 'Satu keping gambar bersaiz 35mm x 50mm berlatar belakang PUTIH tanpa bayang' and 'Saiz wajah pembawa pasport berukuran minima 25-30mm (50% – 60% ukuran ruang gambar mengikut ICAO)'. Head fractions 25-30 mm / 50 mm, from a sentence JIM phrases as 'a minimum of 25-30mm' rather than a closed range; the 50-60 % band is JIM's own stated equivalent. maxPhotoAgeMonths is left undefined (JIM states none). dpi 300 is our rendering choice. glasses, headCovering 'not-allowed' and mouthClosed true are carried over from the adult capture rules on the same page (flagged in gotchas and child.note); neutralExpression false because JIM states no expression rule for under-4s. eligibility.onlinePhotosAccepted 'yes' follows this dataset's convention for a print with no photographer rule: JIM asks only for 'One (1) piece of photo' handed in as a print and says nothing about who takes it or about digital or online submission, so 'yes' means 'no photographer requirement is published', not that JIM accepts an upload. editing 'background-replacement-ok': JIM publishes no retouching rule and asks only for a shadowless white background. No eye-line rule is published.
