Norwegian Driving Licence Photo (førerkort, taken in the booth at the trafikkstasjon): size and requirements
The Norwegian Driving Licence Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Not stated by Statens vegvesen; the booth uses its own backdrop. Light grey is our rendering choice; head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-07 against Statens vegvesen (Norwegian Public Roads Administration), with ICAO Doc 9303.
For a Norwegian førerkort issued or renewed with a new picture by Statens vegvesen, where the photo is taken in a fotoautomat at the trafikkstasjon. Not for a passport or ID card (Politiet's kiosk), and not for the digital Førerkort-app.
The trafikkstasjon's own booth takes the førerkort photo before you are served. See all Norway documents.

What trips people up
- CheckYou cannot bring a photo: 'Du må på en trafikkstasjon for å ta nytt bilde. Du tar bildet i en fotoautomat før du trekker kø-lapp, deretter signerer og betaler du i skranken.'
- CheckA new picture is needed when the card's 15-year administrative validity runs out or after a name change; you may also renew the picture simply because you want to ('fordi du ønsker det').
- CheckThe photo and the card share one validity date (field 4b on the front), so when renewing with a helseattest check whether the picture expires first and take a new one at the same visit.
- CheckYou must be registered as resident in Norway; people who have reported moving abroad or hold a D-number normally do not get a licence.
Source and verification
No national rule published; ICAO 9303 standard applies. Last checked 2026-10-07 (archived copy dated 2024-09-12) at Statens vegvesen (Norwegian Public Roads Administration), with ICAO Doc 9303.
Submitted portraits should be 45.0 mm x 35.0 mm (1.77 in x 1.38 in) in dimension.
The crown-to-chin portion of the facial image shall be 70 to 80 per cent of the longest dimension defined for Zone V, maintaining the aspect ratio between the crown-to-chin and ear-to-ear details of the face of the holder.
Quotes 1-4 are Norwegian (Bokmål) from the Statens vegvesen page 'Fornye førerkortet med nytt bilde' at source.url, read directly (sources/no/vegvesen-fornye-forerkort-med-bilde.txt; the parent page 'Forny førerkort' is sources/no/vegvesen-fornye-forerkort.txt). Statens vegvesen publishes no photo geometry because the booth takes the picture; the page mentions the Førerkort-app only for checking validity and names no likeness trigger, so neither is claimed. Quotes 5-6 are ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 (sources/icao/, Wayback 2024-09-12). Size, dpi, background, photo age, glasses and head-covering values are ICAO-style defaults and our rendering choices. printsRequired is left undefined. vegvesen.no is not matched by the validator host rule; the icao-default confidence exempts it.
