Norwegian Passport Photo (pass, taken by Politiet at the pass- og ID-kontor): size and requirements

The Norwegian Passport Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Politiet photographs 'foran en hvit skjerm' (in front of a white screen) and requires an evenly lit background; light grey is our rendering choice for a file nobody will submit; head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Photo taken within the last 6 months. Last verified 2026-10-07 against Politiet (Norwegian Police), pass- og ID-kontor, with ICAO Doc 9303.

For an ordinary Norwegian passport applied for at a police pass- og ID-kontor or a Norwegian mission abroad, where the police photograph you in the biometrics kiosk. Not for a nødpass (emergency passport), the one Norwegian document that does take a photo from you, and not for a Schengen visa.

The police take the passport photo in the biometrics kiosk at your appointment. See all Norway documents.

What trips people up

  • Check
Do not bring a photo: 'Du skal ikke ha med eget bilde til ordinært pass eller ID-kort. Vi tar bilde av deg når du møter opp til timen din. Det gjelder alle, også babyer og barn.'
  • Check
Prepare for the kiosk instead: glasses and head coverings come off ('Briller og hodeplagg* skal ikke benyttes'), both eyes, eyebrows and ears must be fully visible, hair behind the ears, scarf and outerwear removed, neutral expression with the mouth closed.
  • Check
A head covering is allowed only for religious or other special reasons such as illness, when you will wear the same covering at future controls, and it must not cover any of the face or more of the head than necessary, nor squeeze the face out of shape.
  • Check
There is no lower age limit for a passport, but Politiet warns it can be hard to get an approved picture of the very smallest children who cannot keep their eyes open or hold their head up.
  • Check
Book an appointment, bring your previous passport and a means of payment; for a child bring the consent and the child's own pass or ID card.

No national rule published; ICAO 9303 standard applies. Last checked 2026-10-07 (archived copy dated 2024-09-12) at Politiet (Norwegian Police), pass- og ID-kontor, with ICAO Doc 9303.

  • Submitted portraits should be 45.0 mm x 35.0 mm (1.77 in x 1.38 in) in dimension.
  • The crown-to-chin portion of the facial image shall be 70 to 80 per cent of the longest dimension defined for Zone V, maintaining the aspect ratio between the crown-to-chin and ear-to-ear details of the face of the holder.

Politiet publishes no millimetres because it takes the photo; quotes 10-11 are ICAO Doc 9303 Part 3 (sources/icao/, Wayback 2024-09-12) and supply the reference size and head band only. physical 35 x 45 mm / 600 dpi, background 'light-grey' and maxPhotoAgeMonths 6 are ICAO-style defaults and our rendering choices. glasses 'not-allowed' and headCovering follow the quality sheet. child.underAge 18 is a placeholder. politiet.no is not matched by the validator host rule; the icao-default confidence exempts it.
