Spanish Driving Licence Photo (permiso de conducir, 32 x 26 mm): size and requirements

The Spanish Driving Licence Photo size is 26 x 32 mm (1.02 x 1.26 inches). Con fondo liso (plain background; the DGT names no colour, so we use the white required for the DNI and passport); head 70 to 80 percent of the photo height. Last verified 2026-10-07 against Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), Ministerio del Interior.

For the original 32 x 26 mm photo the DGT lists for a driving licence renewal in the cases where it still asks for one: renewing from abroad through a consulate, or renewing a licence for agricultural or reduced-mobility vehicles (LVA, LCM) at a DGT office. Not for the DNI or passport (same size, white background required), not for a duplicate (no photo listed), and not for the medical-centre renewal, where the centre takes the photo.

What trips people up

  • Check
Since 6 November 2024 the DGT no longer asks for the talón-foto or new photos in procedures where it already holds that documentation. On the renewal page the 32 x 26 mm photo appears only for LVA/LCM licences and for renewals from abroad; the duplicate page lists no photo at all.
  • Check
A religious veil is accepted, but the face oval must be fully visible from the hairline to the chin (desde el nacimiento del pelo hasta el mentón). The DGT names religious reasons only.
  • Check
Renewing from abroad: the consulate-stamped medical report must also carry a recent photo of you, in addition to the 32 x 26 mm original for the licence.
  • Check
The size is 32 x 26 mm like the DNI, not 35 x 45; the DGT says only 'fondo liso', so a plain white print serves both the licence and the DNI.

Good to know before you pay

At an authorised medical centre (centro de reconocimiento) the renewal is done on the spot and they take the photo for you (Allí mismo te hacen la fotografía y podrás firmar la solicitud).
