DPI calculator

Enter your photo's pixel size and the size it will be printed at: the calculator works out the DPI it prints at and whether that meets the resolution you need, either 300 DPI or the figure a chosen document's authority states.

300 DPI is the resolution our own print files use. Pick a document to see whether its authority states a figure.

299 DPI

299 DPI across, 299 DPI down. The lower one is what the print gets.

Fails

Below 300 DPI

For this size at 300 DPI you need at least 603 x 603 px.

How it works

  1. Enter the photo's width and height in pixels.
  2. Enter the print size, or pick a document to fill it in with its official size and print resolution.
  3. The result shows the DPI on each side and, when it is short, how many pixels the print needs.

Limits and when not to use this tool

  • Most documents do not state a print resolution. For those, the figure the calculator fills in is the resolution our own print files use, labelled as our guidance, not as the authority's requirement.
  • The DPI result says whether the pixels are enough for the print size; it does not check sharpness, lighting, head size or anything else about the photo. For those, use the free photo checker.
  • A match in DPI is not an acceptance decision; the authority that receives the photo decides.
