SurePassportPhoto vs doing it yourself for free

Often you need no paid service at all. The UK's online passport application lets you take the photo during the application and crops it for you, and the US State Department offers a photo tool that crops a photo for paper forms. What they do not do is measure your photo against the rules before you submit; that is what you pay us for, and our free photo checker does the measuring part for nothing.

Facts about doing it yourself for free come only from the pages listed under Sources, each with the date we saved it. Checked 2026-10-11.

Where no online photo works

Not every document can be done online. Where the authority restricts photos made at home or online, no online service's file fits, ours included: among them the Canadian passport, the Australian passport, Ireland's Passport Online, and the French and German passports and ID cards. For those documents the tool shows the authority's rule before checkout and the refund guarantee does not cover them. See the full list and the reasons.
