The French National ID Card Photo size is 35 x 45 mm (1.38 x 1.77 inches). Le fond doit être uni, de couleur claire (bleu clair ou gris clair par exemple). For the single photo required with a carte nationale d'identité (CNI) application or renewal, where the photo must come from an approved photographer or booth. Not for a passport abroad in another country's format, and not for a titre de séjour, which uses an e-photo code.

What trips people up
- CheckThe CNI uses exactly the passport norms: 35 x 45 mm, face 32 to 36 mm, plain light background with white forbidden, head bare.
- CheckSi la photo ne respecte pas les caractéristiques, elle sera rejetée et le titre d'identité ne sera pas délivré: a non-compliant photo stops the whole application, not just the photo.
- CheckEarrings and piercings are allowed only if the features stay clearly visible; hair must not cover the face and ears must be clear (Les oreilles doivent être dégagées).
