What trips people up

  • Check
A white background is forbidden in France (Le fond blanc est interdit); the fond must be plain and light, typically light blue or light grey. A US or Chinese white-background photo will be refused.
  • Check
The head must be bare: no hat, scarf or headband, with no religious exception listed on the Service-Public norms table.
  • Check
Only one photo is needed (il n'y a qu'une seule photo à fournir) and it must be under 6 months old and 'ressemblante'.
  • Check
The face is measured from the chin to the top of the skull excluding hair (hors cheveux), 32 to 36 mm, so big hair does not count toward the 70 to 80 percent.
  • Check
Glasses are optional; if worn the frame must be thin and off the eyes and the lenses untinted with no reflection.

Quotes are in French and translated on the page. Fiche F10619 'Quelle photo fournir pour un titre d'identité (passeport, carte d'identité...) ?', vérifié le 11 mars 2026, cites the arrêté du 5 février 2009 and the arrêté du 10 avril 2007; Legifrance itself returned HTTP 403 to our readers so the arrêtés were not read directly. The 32-36 mm face figure is converted to 0.711-0.8 of the 45 mm height. The findPhotographerUrl is the ANTS locator for photographers and booths 'habilités à la photo-signature' (the same locator F10619 links to). Fiche F14929 (sources/fr/service-public-F14929-passeport-majeur.txt) lists 'Photo d'identité de moins de 6 mois et conforme aux normes' among the documents presented at the mairie or consulate; neither fiche mentions an e-photo code for the passport, so none is asserted. 'Retouchée' is not addressed in the norms table; editing is set to unaltered-required because the photo must be produced by an approved system in any case. Light grey is our choice among the 'bleu clair ou gris clair' examples.
