What trips people up

  • Check
    The Japanese frame is 45 x 35 mm with the head 34 ± 2 mm from crown to chin and 4 ± 2 mm of space above the crown, no border; if the aspect ratio cannot be kept, MOFA says to give priority to the width. Voluminous hair is handled by treating a point as far above the eyes as the chin is below them as the 'crown'.
  • Check
    Online applicants can photograph themselves in the app ('申請中にアプリによる撮影も可能'). A studio file uploaded to マイナポータル must be jpg and at most 600 KB (larger files are compressed by the portal); ORRネット abroad takes jpg/jpeg/bmp/png of 20 KB to 2 MB.
  • Check
    White background recommended; the traditional pale blue is still accepted, gradients are not, and no shadow may fall on the background or face. Dark backgrounds and unclear head/background boundaries are listed as faults.
  • Check
    Glasses are discouraged ('眼鏡を外した顔写真を推奨します'): if worn, no tint, no reflection, no shadow, frames clear of the eyes; sunglasses or non-prescription tinted glasses only when medically necessary. Nothing (hair, mask, glasses, false lashes or their shadow) may enter the box around the eyes.
  • Check
    Any image processing that changes your appearance is rejected: enlarging eyes, skin whitening, altering facial parts, moles or wrinkles, masking, and mirror-flipped images ('左右反転※した写真は不適当です', the ※ pointing to a footnote that some camera apps flip the image). Coloured or circle contact lenses and red-eye are rejected too.
  • Check
    No hat; a head covering only where passport law allows it for religious or medical reasons with the face outline visible. Turtlenecks, hoods or anything hiding the chin are faults, as are wigs that change your appearance.
  • Check
    Print on photo paper: JPEG artefacts, jaggies, printer dots and ink bleed are all listed as faults, as are blur, camera shake, glare and uneven skin. Write the applicant's name on the back of a print without the writing showing through.

  • 目の周辺（右図の四角枠内側）に、髪の毛、マスク、眼鏡、つけまつげ、まつげエクステ等の一部、或いはその影が入ってこないようにすること。
  • より確実な本人確認のため、眼鏡を外した顔写真を推奨します。
  • 医療上必要とされない限り、サングラスや処方のない色付きの眼鏡は不適当です。
  • 目を大きく見せたり、美白処理、顔パーツやほくろ、しわ等を修正する等して、本人のイメージを変えたものは不適当です。
  • また、左右反転※した写真は不適当です。
  • 座れない場合は、白色のシーツ等に寝かせて真上から撮影した写真でも問題ありません。
  • 補助者の身体の一部が写り込んでいる場合や、目を閉じている場合は不適当です。
  • 申請中にアプリによる撮影も可能ですが、あらかじめ写真館等で撮影した顔写真データをアップロードする場合は、以下のフォーマットをご確認ください。
  • ファイル形式：jpg
  • ファイル容量：600キロバイト以内
  • 規定サイズを超過したファイルをアップロードした場合、マイナポータルで圧縮を実施します。
  • ファイル形式：jpg・jpeg・bmp・png
  • ファイル容量：20キロバイトから2メガバイト（ファイル容量が指定範囲内であってもアップロード時に圧縮され、圧縮後のファイル容量が規定容量を上回る場合、エラーとなります。）
