What trips people up
- CheckSelf-taken photos are accepted only if they meet the standard ('본인이 직접 촬영한 사진은 여권사진 규격에 적합한 경우에만 사용 가능함'), and any photo altered with editing software, filters or AI is refused; the ministry specifically bans erasing the background in software or compositing the person onto white.
- CheckThe head is measured from the crown excluding hair to the chin and must be 3.2 to 3.6 cm on the 4.5 cm print; a close-up that enlarges the nose and forehead and hides the ears is a listed rejection, so shoot from a distance.
- CheckBackground pure, uniform white with no ink marks and no border; a non-white background is a listed fault. Lighting must be even with no shadows or glare on face or background and must keep the natural skin tone.
- CheckMouth closed with no teeth showing, no smile or raised eyebrows, eyes naturally open looking straight ahead, no red-eye; catchlights in the pupils are tolerated only if they do not cut into the pupil outline. Hair must not cover the eyes, eyebrows or the face outline (cheekbones, cheeks).
- CheckBanned: hats, headbands and head coverings, coloured or circle contact lenses, tinted glasses, sunglasses, glasses reflecting light or frames over the eyes, earphones or headphones, and jewellery that reflects light or hides the face outline. Religious dress is allowed only if worn at all times in daily life and the whole face from forehead to chin shows.
- CheckPrints must be on photo paper (glossy or matte), sharp, 300 dpi recommended; plain-paper prints, blurry or pixelated images, creases or stains are refused.
