For the paper photo you hand in when you apply for a Swiss Identitätskarte at your Wohnsitzgemeinde in the cantons that run ID applications through the commune. Not for a passport, which is a digital colour image captured or accepted at the cantonal Passstelle, and not for the Ausländerausweis.

What trips people up
- CheckWhether you need a paper photo depends on your canton: where the Identitätskarte is applied for at the Gemeinde you bring 'ein Papierfoto, das der Fotomustertafel entspricht'; where it goes through the cantonal Passstelle the office photographs you (or, in some cantons, accepts a digital file). Some communes also photograph you on the spot: 'Informieren Sie sich bei ihrer Gemeinde.'
- CheckThe ID card accepts colour or greyscale ('kann sowohl ein Farbbild als auch ein Graustufenbild abgegeben werden'); the passport does not. The card itself shows the photo in black and white.
- CheckHead 29 to 34 mm chin to top of skull on the 45 mm print (64 to 76 percent): slightly smaller than the ICAO 70 to 80 percent band. Children under 11 may go down to 23 mm.
- CheckPrint on smooth photo paper only: glossy or semi-matt, no texture you can feel ('kein Pearl- oder Seidenraster-Effekt'), no rounded corners, no visible pixel structure, no creases. Plain office paper will be refused.
- CheckThe photo may be up to one year old, a friendly expression is allowed with the mouth closed, and uniforms are refused ('Fotos mit Personen in Uniform sind nicht gestattet').
