Beards and facial hair in passport photos

No country in our dataset bans beards in passport photos, and a few say so in writing. What facial hair does interact with is subtler: the recency rules about reflecting your current appearance, the way head height is measured at the chin, and the face detection that portals and checkers run. This guide collects what is actually published, so you can keep the beard and lose the uncertainty.

What authorities say in writing

Germany's guidance for the German ID card states that dyed hair, beards and normal make-up are fine; the fault it refuses is hair covering the face from forehead to chin. Poland allows beards and moustaches on the Polish passport if they do not hinder recognition, while gov.pl adds the cautious advice that shaving avoids problems, the same hedge it applies to jewellery. The Dominican Republic's renewal guidance for the Dominican passport lists what does require a new photo, facial surgery or trauma among it, and says a beard, dyed hair or normal ageing does not. The absence elsewhere is itself the answer: rules that enumerate banned items, hats, sunglasses, headphones, uniforms, simply never mention beards.

Recency rules are the real constraint

The rule a beard can genuinely break is the one about looking like yourself. The US visa standard requires the photo to be taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance for the DV lottery and visa uploads, and most countries carry a similar six-month limit. Growing or shaving a substantial beard between photo and interview is precisely the kind of change that wording targets. The safe order is: settle the facial hair first, then take the photo, then apply; and if your appearance changes dramatically after the document is issued, that is a question for the issuing authority, not a photo-tool problem.

How a beard is measured

Head-height rules measure chin to crown, and the chin means the chin, not the bottom of the beard. Finland writes this down for the Finnish passport: hair and beard are not included in the size of the head, and the location of the crown and the chin is estimated when hidden. So a long beard does not make your head 'too big'; an examiner estimates where the jaw ends. Automated tools have to make the same estimate from pixels, with less judgement. Our checker places the chin using face landmarks; a dense beard hides the jaw edge, so treat the measured head height as an estimate in that case and confirm the framing against the template overlay rather than relying on the number alone. That is a limitation of every landmark-based measurement, ours included.

Practical points for a bearded photo

Small things that keep the checks and the examiner happy.

  1. 1.Keep the mouth closed and visibly so; a moustache that hides the lip line makes the mouth check harder for software, so neaten it before shooting.
  2. 2.Light evenly from the front: a side-lit beard throws a broad shadow across the neck and jaw, the area Canada's shadow rules name, as the shadow guide explains.
  3. 3.Make sure the beard does not blend into dark clothing; contrast at the jaw helps both detection and the examiner.
  4. 4.Match the photo to how you will look at the counter or interview; the six-month rules are about recognisability, not grooming preference.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new passport if I grow a beard after it is issued?

Countries that address it, like the Dominican Republic, say no: a beard or normal ageing is not a significant change. Only major changes such as facial surgery trigger a new photo. Check your own authority's wording if in doubt.

Why does one checker say my head is 70 percent and another 74?

With a full beard, every tool is estimating a hidden chin line, so measurements differ by a few percent. Keep the head comfortably inside the band rather than at its edge, and judge the overlay with your own eyes.
