For the digital photo uploaded to the NIA government-services platform when renewing or replacing a passport or exit-entry permit fully online (全程网办) in the pilot cities. Not for a first passport, which is applied for in person, and not for a Chinese visa upload.

What trips people up
- CheckThe portal's most common rejection is a retouched or beautified photo: 出问题最多的原因是 P图和美颜. Turn off beauty mode, filters and face slimming, and do not wear coloured contact lenses or heavy make-up.
- CheckDo not use the front camera for a selfie; the NIA says its wide angle distorts the face, hides the ears and may mirror the image. Use the rear camera with a helper or a tripod timer, closer than 1 m.
- CheckThe crop must be 3:4 with the head about 2/3 of the image width and 400 to 1000 px wide; a full-resolution phone photo is too big and is rejected on pixel count.
- CheckEyebrows, eyes and ears must all be visible (记得露出 眉毛、眼镜、耳朵); earrings, necklaces and hair over the ears fail the feature check.
- CheckThe 2011 file rules still apply to the image itself: JPEG, 24-bit RGB, 20 KB to 80 KB. We compress to that range.
